Drivers would no longer be able to stop at toll booths and pay cash, under a proposal to eliminate the toll booths and go to an entirely electronic system. There will be two hearings on the issue this week. One of those will be in Springfield.
Tolls instead would be collected electronically through a driver's E-ZPass transponder or by a new system that records license plate numbers and sends a bill to vehicle owners.
Officials are planning a public meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Worcester City Hall, followed by another public meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. at Springfield City Hall.
Transportation officials already held a meeting this past week in Boston to discuss environmental impacts of the project.
The state is also planning an all-electronic tolling system for the Tobin Bridge.
