HAMP- LONGMEADOW AND HAMPDEN WAIT FOR CASINO DECISION

In what is considered a key step toward the licensing of a resort casino in western Massachusetts, the state's gambling commission is set to issue several surrounding community decisions.

MGM Resorts International has proposed an $800 million casino in downtown Springfield and is the only remaining applicant for the sole casino license in the western region.

The state's gambling law allows cities and towns that are near proposed casino sites to apply for surrounding community status, making them eligible for money to handle increased traffic or other potential impacts from the facility.

The commission is expected to decide on surrounding community petitions from Northampton, Longmeadow and Hampden.
